The Meaning of Home

We believe that affordable housing is a basic human right. We deeply value partnerships that align with our mission and vision - Habitat for Humanity's Meaning of Home contest does just that.

We believe that affordable housing is a basic human right. It's this unique perspective on development that allows us to reimagine the design of a building and how it will ultimately contribute to the local community. As such, we deeply value partnerships that align with our mission and vision - Habitat for Humanity's Meaning of Home contest does just that.

What is the meaning of “home”?

The Meaning of Home contest is open to students in grades 4 through 6 across Canada. Students may submit a poem or an essay explaining what “home” means to them. Not only is this contest a fun, meaningful way for children to exercise their creative writing skills, but it also teaches children about the importance of safe, affordable housing for all. By encouraging children to think about their place in their community, they can create a greater connection with those around them and find a deeper appreciation for the roofs over their heads.

Through their writing, students bring awareness to a societal issue that heavily impacts our communities in the Lower Mainland. Entrants have an opportunity to win a grand prize of a $30,000 grant for their local Habitat for Humanity, plus an iPad and a pizza party. The runner up will receive a $10,000 grant, plus a tablet and a pizza party. All entries will enable a $10 donation to a local Habitat for Humanity.

How we align

Our extensive track record in real estate, and our own guiding principles give us the knowledge and vision we need to take a more thoughtful approach to our place in the development industry. We have the ability to create an impact on people, communities, and the environment through meaningful work — and the Meaning of Home contest is one such endeavour we can get behind. We believe that communities are strongest when they bring together people who share a common vision for the future. This vision must include a commitment to affordability and accessibility for all people in our community. By giving children an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of home, the Habitat for Humanity contest is helping to build a generation of people who care deeply about their community, their connection with others, and their ability to make an impact through affordable housing.

The contest runs through February 24, 2023, with winners announced in May 2023. Teachers may create an account to submit multiple entries, and parents may also submit individual entries through this link. Take a look at last year’s winning entries for inspiration.
